Unit Converter

Convert length, weight, volume, area and temperature. Metric and imperial units.

Value

About this tool

Everyday measurements in Cambodia are mostly metric: fuel at the pump is sold in litres, land is described in square metres and hectares, temperatures are quoted in degrees Celsius, and construction is measured in metres. But imported goods, foreign documents and shipping paperwork arrive in imperial units — pounds and ounces for weight, feet and inches for length, US gallons for volume — and that is exactly the mismatch this converter exists to bridge. The tool converts within five categories: length, weight, volume, temperature and area, and the unit lists are fixed. Length: metres, kilometres, centimetres, millimetres, miles, yards, feet and inches. Weight: kilograms, grams, pounds and ounces. Volume: litres, millilitres, US gallons, quarts, pints and fluid ounces. Temperature: degrees Celsius, Fahrenheit and kelvin. Area: square metres, square kilometres, square centimetres, hectares, square feet and acres. If a unit is not on the list, the converter cannot handle it: it does not include the gold units chi and damleung, the rice measures tao, thang and sack, or anything else that is not in the pickers. It converts physical measurements only — not currency, not time zones.

How it works

Every category converts through one base unit, using the constant tables in unit-conversions.ts. Length goes through the metre (LENGTH_TO_M: a mile is 1609.344 m, a foot 0.3048 m, an inch 0.0254 m), weight through the kilogram (WEIGHT_TO_KG: a pound is 0.453592 kg), volume through the litre (VOLUME_TO_L: a US gallon is 3.78541 L), and area through the square metre (AREA_TO_M2: a hectare is 10000 m², an acre 4046.86 m²). Temperature converts through Celsius with the standard formulas — Fahrenheit to Celsius is (F − 32) × 5/9, kelvin is Celsius + 273.15 (convertTemp in unit-conversions.ts). The widget (unit-converter-client.tsx) offers five category tabs; picking a category sets the two unit selects, and the result is computed live from the value you type, formatted to at most six decimal places with no fixed rounding. Load Sample sets 100 metres to feet. The factors are fixed constants — this is a conversion table, not live market data, so there is nothing to refresh and no exchange rate is involved.

Use cases

  • A landowner in Kampong Cham converting a survey measured in square metres into hectares to compare with the size written on a title document.
  • A construction contractor in Phnom Penh turning feet and inches from a foreign building drawing into metres for the local site team.
  • A shopkeeper weighing imported goods listed in pounds and ounces and converting them to kilograms for a local price board.
  • A household checking the Fahrenheit markings on an imported oven against a recipe written in Celsius.
  • A buyer of imported materials converting a sheet price quoted per square foot into square metres to compare with local suppliers.
  • A workshop in Siem Reap converting a machine part’s millimetre measurement into inches to match a replacement part ordered from abroad.
  • A driver checking how many litres an imported fuel can marked in US gallons holds before a trip to the pump.

Frequently asked questions

  • Does this converter handle chi and damleung for gold, or tao, thang and sack for rice?

No. The tool converts only the units in its fixed lists, which are shown in the pickers: the metric units plus the imperial units listed on this page. It has no gold units, no rice measures, and no unit that is not in the selectors. If a traditional Cambodian unit is not shown, this converter cannot convert it, and no conversion factor for it is published here.

  • Which gallon does the volume category use?

The volume table implements the US liquid gallon, which is 3.785411784 litres (the tool stores 3.78541). The UK imperial gallon is a different, larger size and is not included. When a document says "gallon", check whether it means US or imperial before converting — most imported goods and shipping paperwork from the US market quote US gallons.

  • Are the conversion results exact?

The factors in the tool come from the standard tables of the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C), and several are exact by definition, such as 1 inch = 2.54 cm and 1 mile = 1609.344 m. The result display rounds to at most six decimal places, so for very large values the last digits shown can be rounded.

  • Is a result from this page binding for contracts or legal documents?

No. This page is a convenience calculator; it is not an official measurement service and its output is not binding for land titles, customs declarations, contracts or court documents. Always verify figures that will be used in a legal context with the issuing authority or a licensed professional, and keep the original measurement unit.

  • Why is the temperature tab in Fahrenheit and kelvin when Cambodia uses Celsius?

Everyday temperature use in Cambodia is Celsius, and the tool covers it as the first option, but imported appliances and foreign documents often state Fahrenheit, and scientific material uses kelvin. The tab converts all three through Celsius using the standard formulas, so no one has to convert by hand.

  • Can I convert a compound unit like miles per gallon or litres per 100 km?

No. The converter works one unit pair at a time within a single category. It can convert miles to kilometres and US gallons to litres separately, but it cannot divide one result by the other to produce a compound figure such as litres per 100 kilometres — for that, do the two conversions and divide yourself.

  • Does this tool convert currency or anything besides measurements?

No. It converts physical measurement units only — length, weight, volume, temperature and area. Currency exchange, gold prices and time zones are handled by separate tools elsewhere on this site; this page carries no rate data of any kind, and nothing here changes from day to day.

Data and accuracy

Conversion factors are fixed constants from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology — NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C (General Tables of Units of Measurement) for the US customary units (inch, foot, yard, mile; pound, ounce; US gallon, quart, pint, fluid ounce; square foot, acre) and the SI definitions for the metric units (hectare = 10,000 m²; litre; degree Celsius). The factors are compiled in the constant tables of unit-conversions.ts and never change, so there is no update cadence and no live data is fetched.
