About this tool

The Currency Converter converts an amount between the riel, the US dollar and the other currencies in the National Bank of Cambodia daily bulletin, using the bank's published reference rate for today. Choose the currency you have, the currency you want and the amount, and the page shows the converted value to the riel, to two decimals for other currencies, plus a table of what one dollar buys in every currency the bulletin lists on that date. It is for the everyday arithmetic of a two-currency economy: pricing a dollar salary in riel before payday, working out what a dollar price in a shop means in the notes in your pocket, checking a hotel or tour quote, or converting a remittance before you compare it with what a money changer offers. It converts at the reference rate, which is a published anchor for the market and not a rate anyone will trade at — banks, money changers and payment apps set their own buying and selling prices and keep the difference. It does not include commission, transfer fees or card spreads, does not do crypto or gold, and is not a quote.

How it works

The page fetches `v1/exchange-rates` with the current language and today's date through the same `useExchangeRates` hook the exchange-rates table uses, so the numbers come from the NBC bulletin the site already mirrors rather than from a per-request call to the central bank. Each bulletin row carries a unit and a bid, ask and average; the converter reduces a row to a single number by dividing the average by the unit, which matters for rows quoted per 100 units such as the yen. Converting to riel multiplies the amount by that number; converting from riel divides by it; converting between two foreign currencies goes through the riel on both sides, which is a cross rate and not a direct market quote. The table under the result takes the dollar row and divides it by each other row, so every value is expressed per one dollar. The response date is printed under the result, and the footer shows the Phnom Penh timestamp of the mirrored snapshot. If the request fails the page shows a load error and no result rather than a stale number, and the currency selectors stay disabled until the first response arrives.

Use cases

  • A worker paid in dollars converting a monthly salary into riel to plan rent and family transfers
  • A shopper in a Phnom Penh market working out what a dollar price means in the riel notes they hold
  • A traveller checking what a hotel or tour quote in dollars comes to in their own currency
  • A small business pricing an import in baht or dong against the riel before quoting a customer
  • A freelancer converting a client payment from dollars to riel before comparing it with a bank offer
  • A student checking a scholarship or family remittance in riel against the amount received
  • A teacher explaining how a cross rate is built from two riel quotes rather than traded directly

Frequently asked questions

  • Is this the rate I will get at a money changer or a bank?

No. The figure is the National Bank of Cambodia reference rate for the day, which is published as an anchor for the market. Banks, money changers, exchange counters at markets and payment apps set their own buying and selling rates and earn the difference between them, so the cash you receive will usually be a little worse than this number. For a large amount, ask for the counter rate in writing before you hand over the money.

  • How often do the rates change?

The bulletin is a daily publication, so the rate changes on each business day the National Bank of Cambodia publishes, and does not change over weekends or public holidays. This page requests the current date and the server returns the bulletin for that day when it has one, otherwise the latest stored snapshot, which is why the date printed under the result can be earlier than today. The mirrored copy is also cached, so a rate can lag the bank's own publication by a short time.

  • Why does the result differ from the exchange-rates page?

They read the same bulletin but answer different questions. The exchange-rates page shows the full table for a date you choose, with bid, ask, average and unit exactly as published, plus the official PDF links. This page reduces each row to one number — the average divided by the unit — and multiplies or divides your amount by it, which is arithmetic on the same data rather than a different source. If you pick the same date on both, the per-dollar figures agree.

  • Which currencies can I convert between?

The riel and every currency in the bulletin the API returns, which covers the dollar, euro, pound, baht, dong, yuan, yen, won, Singapore and Australian dollars and about twenty more. The list is built from the response, so a currency the National Bank of Cambodia stops publishing disappears from the selector. Gold, crypto, airline miles and any currency not in the bulletin are not supported, and the page will not invent a rate for them.

  • Is the conversion official, and can I use it for an invoice?

The underlying figures are official reference rates; the conversion is this site's arithmetic on them. That is usually enough for a budget, a quote or a personal record, but an invoice, a tax filing or an audit may specify which rate to use and on which date — often the rate of the day the invoice is issued or the day payment is received. Check the rule that applies to the filing, and use the exchange-rates page to capture the published table for the exact date you need.

  • Where are the history and comparison tools?

Under the converter. The history page plots a currency pair over time so you can see how the rate has moved across weeks or months, and the compare page puts several currencies side by side for a chosen date. Both read the same mirrored bulletin, so the three pages are consistent with each other. The exchange-rates page adds the official English PDF bulletins for the date, which is what you want if a third party needs the bank's own document.

  • Why is the dollar figure shown to two decimals and the riel to none?

Because of how the two currencies are used in practice. Riel amounts are large numbers and are normally quoted in whole riel, so the page rounds to zero decimals; dollar and other foreign amounts are quoted to cents, so it keeps two. The rounding is display only and happens after the conversion, so a chain of small conversions can drift by a few riel compared with converting the total once.

  • Does the converter work offline or store my amounts?

It needs a connection for the rates, and it sends only the language and the date to fetch them — the amount you type stays in the browser and is not part of the request. There is no account, no history of your conversions and nothing saved between visits, so the page will not remember an amount you entered yesterday. If the rates request fails it shows an error and no figure instead of guessing.

Data and accuracy

Rates come from the National Bank of Cambodia daily exchange rate bulletin, ingested into this site's database and served through `v1/exchange-rates`, which the `useExchangeRates` hook in `_custom/_components/tools/finance/exchange-rates/_hooks/use-exchange-rates.ts` calls with an explicit date and language. The bulletin is published on business days; the mirror can lag a publication and is cached, so the date under the result is the authoritative freshness signal. The conversion arithmetic is in `currency-converter-client.tsx` (`convertAmount`, `ratePerOne`) and applies the average per unit from each row. Content checked against the bulletin on 21 October 2026.
